I am movong up from a 29 Bio-Cube to either a 57 Illuminata (36x18X21)or one of the DAP 65 gallon rimless tanks (36x20x21). I have an Eheim 1260 pump and I am curious if I should split it so I have an aouput coming out of each side of the overflow or should I just leave a single output.

Also I am curious if I should just look at a single Mp40 or a few MP10's?

If I go with a single output would an MP40 be perfect or an MP10?
Two outputs, one MP10 or 40?
Sorry, I know it is quite a few questions but I want to get it right the first time with a little professional input.

I am looking at Reef and fish and hopefully a clam.

Thanks

Personally I prefer running a smaller return pump (Eheim 1250) Less noise, less heat, less evaporation. As for single or double, that just depends on personal preference. Since most of your water movement is supplied by the vortechs. Which also reinforces my thoughts on a smaller return pump.

I would go with just one mp40. But thats just me.

I would go with 2 mp10's, better control of dead spots, plus alternating current, with your return pump, do you plan on getting media reactors? you can tee off the return to the reactors and back to the sump to reduce the return and noise. or go with a smaller pump like soymilk suggested.

Soymilk,
Thanks for the input. I am stuck with the 1260 because I already bought it so the 1250 is not an option at this point. I plan on keeping it external at this point so heat should not be an issue. As far as the 1 oir two returns, I was hoping that by using 2 returns there would be less need for a Vortech or if I went with a single return, then that would be getting enough flow on one side and I would only need a single vortech on the other. As you know, they are very proud of their pumps.

Flexrac,

Not sure about reactors at this time, but are you suggesting tee the return on the pump so that each side goes to a reactor and then returns to the main tank? Wouldn't this possibly be to much flow for a single reactor?

Thanks

2 Returns will give you better coverage but you will still need some sorta powerhead. Since you're getting a vortech, it wouldn't matter as much having 2 returns.

as for 2 mp10s. That would be ideal i think, the only problem is 2 mp10 with wireless will run you about 270 each. 250 if you look around, there are no used wireless floating around as of yet since its so new. A used mp40 which can be found either here, reefcentral, nanoreef can be had for about 250-300. A little bit more cost efficient to go with one mp40.

I think felix means T'ing off the return into a reactor and having the output of the reactor dump into the sump while the rest of the return heads up into the display tank.

he does not need wireless on a tank that size, the tank is small enough and the cord is long enough to put the controllers in a centralized location and connect them, my mp 10 was connected on one side of my 40 breeder while the controller was mounted on the other side.

You can't connect mp10 to sync via cord. Only wireless, and only the new version mp10w es

Check here....i have a 57G illuminata up and running.

get past all of the cheesy fluff pics, and you can see a full tank shot. i highly suggest you drill the overflow and return yourself. im using a glassholes 700 gallon kit.

http://www.glass-holes.com/700-gph-Overflow-complete-kit-gh700kit.htm

it takes up sooo much less room than the factory pre drilled oceanic tank.

i have a 29 gallon tank i got a petco to use as a sump, that fits nicely, even with the laundry list of goodies i keep underneath the tank.

i have a eheim 1262 running, that choked back quite a bit. I just got my 1260 in the mail (thanks david) and im planning on swapping it out when i get off my lazy ar$e. I feed my NP reactor, as well as my denitrator off the return pump.

i also have a hoss BM-180CS underneath, which is readily serviceable, albeit tight.

Onto the vortechs. I’m running two MP-10's and it seems to be doing a fine job. I’ve contemplated adding one more mp-10, but to be honest, don’t think you need it. I have to position them right, or I’m kicking up sand off the bottom.

Every raves about synched/synching, pssssh that’s waaay to much $$ for me…just set them on different modes, and you’ll get a random enough flow going.

good luck with your build.
