Hey everyone, I am starting my new 3 gallon Pico. It seems like a hell of deal on DRfosters, only 41$ plus you get 10% off so the discount pays for the shipping. I was going to see if anyone else on here has one? post your set ups! I want to see what y'all did so i can take notes. Ill post mine when I get it up and running this weekend

Cool man, wish I had advice for you on a pico. But there's one at the Fish Gallery that I love and look at it every time I go there at checkout. They've had it for a while so you should ask them what they do to maintain it and what inverts work for them and don't work for them. They've definitely tried a lot of things.

I just set it up and I have a small goby in it for cycling purposes and I have a thin film on the top of the water, do you think this is part of the process?

what you see is dust on the surface. I had a picotope 3 gallon set up for little over a year. only draw back is with a small amount of water- parameter changes can be major swings. temperature fluctuation/ evaporation with causes salt level changes/ and a host of other attributes come into mind. I installed a RKE that I had laying around on mine to keep in control of the parameters. installed a chiller, ATO, Heater, Pico Protein Skimmer, Glazer custom lid, AC70 Hang on Back Filter with a modified Stevie-T Media Rack and a DIY LED fixture with adjustable dimming feature to mimic sunrise and sunset. Towards the later months, I built my own Auto Water Change feature (1 cup twice a day water change)- and an auto refrigerated liquid feeder on a timer function. Only reason I took it down- scratched the crud out of the front glass with cleaner magnet- and that drove me nuts... so, I replaced it with a smaller tank with all the same features plus a pico sump.

oh, goby could end up to be expensive cycle sacrifice. I prefer live rock cycle...

Here is a link to my picotope build.

your referring to the skimmer box? I had that custom made- Glazer no longer builds. He has been out of touch for couple years now. though, you can find a local skilled acrylic craftsman that can do that! check the Marsh Sponsors. Building an Obsession built my Sump for my shallow reef tank- I think I have seen somewhere on-line where he has built similar type skimmer boxes. such a box skims the surface layer of water.

Just updating whats going on in the tank. I have had it running for three weeks, and I just got through my diatom bloom. I cleaned it all off but left some on the back for bacterial purpose. I have a clownfish in there and a peppermint shrimp. I also have some xenia that has tripled in size within a week and a half, but my kenya tree has grown but shriveled up because i put a power head in. my peppermint shrimp has since molted and consumed the shell. its also a bear bottom tank. I will try to get pictures up. I know I'm going to get crap for the clownfish in a 3 gallon tank but I am getting an RBTA soon from the LFS. My tank has been under 100$ but after the RBTA it will be 130. I still think that my tank is good representation that you can keep a salt water tank and not spend a fortune.

I also found that my bacteria colony has fully established itself. because I have been through the diatom phases, where diatoms release eggs thus making the water seem milky, then the boom, and now I'm starting to see some of it disappear almost. it was brown but now its a pale sandy brown.

Anyone looking at this thread that has a Pico Kit, I highly recommend getting the Top Fin 10 gallon internal filter, it great a gentle flow through out my tank and also cleans it. I currently have the jets pointed upwards to skim the top for debris and it keeps my bare bottom clean of large waste.

it was 12$ at petsmart

update, the kenya tree is now up and out. I got an air tube and held it below the coral and blew air on it to dust it off. I plan on getting the anemone tomorrow, still trying to get pics up

Let me know what your opinions on my pico tank are, everything looks heathly and my diatoms aren't coming back anymore.

if anyone wants to know what I did to get to this point;
1) set tank up with live rock, xenia, kenya tree
2)goby to create ammonia
3)only topped it off with fresh water for 3 weeks
4) diatom bloom, let diatoms engulf everything
5) clean tank, take 2 cups out and replace with new salt water and suck up larger diatom particles and dead rock
6)added Top Fin 10 as a power head/ filter
8) add clownfish
9) add RBTA and 2.1 pound of live rock TOTAL LR:3.7lb
10) feed RBTA every other day, mysis shrimp, same thing i feed my clown.

In the future i plan on getting an aqua clear filter for the back but right now everything is working great and stable, and i might get another clown and use this as a breeding tank. but that won't be for another 3 months, i need to make sure everything is goes well in the long run. also if you buy this tank, make sure and by the top that goes with it.
- I do one cup water change every sunday or two cups every two weeks.

my average salinity is 1.25, and my temp is 79 and fluctuates between 81-77

Nice, I had a 3G pico for a while with the AC70 turned sump/refugium. If I did it again I'd DEFINITELY buy the kit available to skim the surface too
