I've heard that it's a good idea to put a layer of foam inbetween your tank and stand to self-level it. My question is what kind of foam? Styrofoam or the kind you'd find in a mat and where do you get it?
Styrofoam will work. It doesn't have to be to thick. 1/4" styro should be thick enough. I've used cardboard before also, but it can get wet easily from playing in your tank and get nasty.
If you level your stand before you put your tank on it you don't have to use styrofoam. To level it out use wood wedges you can buy at HD underneath the stand. After it is level you should have a flat surface that supports the tank completely all the way around evenly so it doesn't put any stress on it.
