I'm coming up to Houston from College Station this next week, and am going to have dinner downtown. I'm going to be getting there early so that I can go to some of the LFS around before I go to dinner. Do ya'll have any suggestions of stores that I could hit on my way, or not too terribly out of the way?

Thanks

Eric

If you're coming in on 290, Aquarium World is a very nice store to visit, but they are kind of expensive so don't plan on buying a lot there. Still, they have a huge tank - something like 10,000 gallons - that's worth the stop to see it.

There are some other good stores that are probably a little out of the way for you. I usually like to hit Global (Gessner & Bellaire), City Pets (Beltway 8 & Beechnut), and now Aquatic Center (59 & Airport). They are all within about 10 minutes of each other near 59 South and the tollroad.

And if you go a little further out west, there are a couple more good stores - Fish Land (near Westheimer & Eldridge) and T&T (Hwy 6 & Bellaire).

Every store has it's strengths and weaknesses - what in particular do you want to see?

I'm looking to get a couple of corals (lps, leathers, zoos), and ideally a jawfish, but perhaps a couple of firefish.

My favorite stores for corals are Global, Aquatic Center, and City Pets. All of those stores usually have a great selection. Global is the place for SPS frags, if you're into that. What I like about City Pets is their $5 frag tank, where you can get all kinds of zoo, mushroom, button polyp, ricordia, etc. frags for $5 a pop. The selection changes constantly, and I like to drop by whenever I'm in the area and just see what they have. It's a cheap way to add a lot of diversity to your tank.

For fish, I've always had the best luck with the fish I've bought from Fish Land. I don't know how he does it, but Andy always seems to get in some of the fattest, healthiest fish I've seen in an LFS. They have a fair selection of corals too, but he has been known to sell dyed corals so buyer beware.

Aquatic World on Jones/290 (I assume you'll be coming down 290) had 5 pearly jawfish yesterday. Sure were cute!

Village Tropical probably wouldn't be too far out of your way. It's off of 59 on Shepherd. Nice folks there too.
