--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I retrofit my JEBO from 8w to 2 of the 10w or 20w 50/50 screw in Fluorescents do I need to use a glass or plastic between them and the water? The 8w Fluorescent has a plastic cover.

Thanx in advance,

mal

I see no reason why you would need to. The only thing it does is keep salt away from the bulb.

there will be no problem on the uv end. just make sure that you shield the fixture from the water some. otherwise algae will grow on the bulb itself. and always remember this, a glass top on any tank removes 15% of your light automatically and it keeps warm air close to the tank water.

just my 2 cents.

The glass will trap hot air in your canopy and will not allow evaporative cooling thus causing your tank water to slowly heat up. The light loss due to the glass is also a minus. The screw in bulbs should not put out much if any UV rays.

i had my bulbs roght over the water and for some reason it got wet enough that i had algae growing on teh outside of the bulb. anyway the reality is that if it is far enough away from the water you will not have this problem.

Wow, if your bare bulbs were constantly wet enough to grow algae on them, you may soon be eligible for a Darwin Award! :dead:
