Maybe some of you saw my 40G with the 250W 14K bulb pendant over it. I was wondering are actinics pretty much for show and I need to replace that 14K with a 10K or below in order to get good coral growth or am I ok with what I have? Thanks for any assistance.

Actually, the best light for coral growth is a 6500k but it's crap for good coral color. I would keep the 14k and suppliment with actinics. I'm not the expert but I did do alot of research before I got my lights. I'm in it for the looks and color, so I have 400w 10k's and 250w 20k's with actinic VHO's.

Coral growth and health also depends alot on proper water parameters as well as proper Calcium and Alkalinity levels. I run dual 250 watt 6500K Iwasaki's and four 110 watt URI super actinic VHO and I think I have good growth and good color but that is just my opinion :) I like the look of corals under 20Ks but I can't stand all the blue.

I used to run 3x250w Saki's w/ 2 96w 5' VHO's. Recently switched to Ushio 10k's w/ the VHO's and i love them. Coral growth is still very good, and the colors are coming out much better than with the saki's.
