Tap water is notoriously full of impurities, and if what you are seeing is a diatom bloom, it's no wonder. You can't start a pristine tank with crappy polluted water.

Marcpuffer,

If it is cyanobacteria, or red slime, try the search feature on this site. There are several threads on the subject that will help you out. (it's helped me out a lot in the past!)

BLUEYEDWHTDEVIL- You might want to think about changing your nickname, IMO.

marcpuffer....i have heard of some good knockoffs on ebay...i do believe you pay for what you get...and good water might not be something you want to skimp on...make sure whatever one you get has a di bypass though. you can make your own drinking water for pennies on the dollar...

Hello and sorry to hear about your problem. Let me say I made this mistake and placed a similar post when I started out here. I think I may have 2 units in my work truck if your interested in buying one maybe we could work somthing out i'll check tomorow. I would sell you one to help you out much cheaper plus there commercial units much better than normal ones. Hope this helps you with your problem I ended up having to drain my tank and start over I was lucky I noticed all the trouble int he early stages.

sounds like the dreaded T.U. algae...nothing worse that burnt orange in my reef tank. lol...kidding...I picked up my 5 stage RO/DI unit from Ebay for about $120..no complaints and like someone earlier said, its free drinking water as well. I fill the jugs for my 5 gallon water cooler all the time, as well as make block ice from it. PM me if you'd like to know who I bought it from.
