What kind of a ballast is it? Manufacturer? Have you opened it to see if the board is epoxy coated?

Do you see any black burn marks on any parts? Ends of capacitors bulged? Should be a fuse in there too, may not be able to visually see if it's intact, might need a meter.

I might be able to help you fix it.

You wouldn't smell anything or see it from the outside. Did it stop working while running or just didn't turn on one day?

I take it you have this ballast? http://coralvue.com/400watt-ballasts/

I've never messed with these ballasts but I know they can be repaired as they don't have the epoxy coating on the internal parts. They are somewhat known to fail. Never repaired a MH ballast but I have done some PC ballasts before. It's all standard electrical components. You can send it back to the manufacturer, I think they want something like $75 to $90 to fix it.

If you can't find someone to fix it for you you're welcome to bring it by and I can take a look at it.

Why are you asking about repairing a ballast if you don't know if it's broken? :?

Well if something is wrong it can be repaired. If you got it for free and you are going to use it you might as well get a bulb and a reflector. Even if you pay the manufacturer to fix it you are paying a little less than you can buy one used from someone for.

With the right reflector maybe. I think most people have 3 on a tank that size.
