Have anyone ever mirrored the back of a tank. They say a mirror makes a room appear bigger, would that work on a tank? I was also thinking it would make it easier to enjoy the critters that decide (despite your best efforts) to make their home on the BACK of some rock.

Any thoughts?

That actually sounds like a very cool idea, but I wonder if the fish would be constantly bumping against the side, trying to go into what appears to be a space that isn't, or fighting with its reflection. Certainly I would think it would reflect some light. Try it out and let us know how it goes :)

I went through a thread on RC's large reef tanks forum where the guy had a small equip room behind the tank. It was probably only 3-4ft wide, and he put a large mirror across the rear wall of it. It definitely seemed to make the tank apppear deeper.

Here's a link where he discusses it.

I don't think they mirrorback marine systems because of the corrosive effects of salt on the silvering. If you could mount the mirror off of the glass so it didn't come in contact with the water I think you'd be OK.

Yeah, the mirrored-back hex tank I used to have went to hell in a handbasket with the salt. It was great at first and I was able to see what was going on in the back, but some of the fish just fought with themselves all the time.

I have mylar on the back of my tank. Its cool becuase you can see whats going on with the other side of the rocks as well. And my fish cant hide as easily. I like it. I have 2 blue tangs, clown, coral beauty and some others and theyve never tried to eat themselves. haha But it might be a concern with other more aggressive fish.
