I went to pick up some of this at the grocery store to add some Ca to my tank. However, when I looked at the contents, it says 0% Calcium.

Was I looking at the wrong pickling lime?

My father-n-law confused it with pickling salt one time. I had asked to borrow a couple spoon fulls till I could get to the store. When I got over there, it wasn't lime he was offering me.

Walmart should have it in the canning section, by the tupperware bowls. Might be behind some stuff.

so next question. How much of this stuff do I add to the water? or is there some convoluted MARSH formula factoring in size of tank, amount of softies, hardies, fishies, rockies, current Ca level, etc.?

I'd like to just know just how many teaspoons per # of gallons. Yes, that would be easiest.

I'll follow along on this one.

I use a kalk reactor. Before I bought one I would use 2-3 heaping tables spoon full for each 5 gallons of top off water. I you are using a 5 gallon bucket, just add the wages then pour in your top off water. That will mix it. You will want to use all of the water except the last inch or so in the top off container. Repeat as needed for your top off. Hope this helps.

I looked up the same question and saw on reefcentral they were saying 1-2 teaspoons per gallon. I have a 5 gal topoff container, and I add about 3-4 teaspoons or so every time I fill it up. I have some lime that has settled on the bottom, so it gets stirred up and mixed in a bit as the container is filled too. Supposedly the saturation point is 2 tsp per gallon.

I add 1 tsp of pickling lime to every gallon for top off water only.

I did a water change once and added only 2 tsp to every 5 gallons of new RO/DI water and the water turned a cloudy white. It's wierd how it doesn't turn cloudy in a more concentrated 1 gallon.

I recommend for daily top off only

It will be cloudy while mixing it. Allow time for it to settle and the water will be clear. Make sure you don't use the water from the very bottom of your container.

i wrote a little article about dosing a while back... i'll try to find the link.

But if you're adding it to your top off water, you can't really put too much. The way it works is, when you add the kalk to your water. It'll dissolve until the point it can't dissolve anymore. You then add the clear mix as top off water to add extra alk and calc to your tank.

As for putting it into Fresh saltwater, you will more than likely get cloudy water 100% of the time. The two chemicals will react when you put pickling lime/kalkwasser into saltwater. It'll precipitate and basically turn to little bits of sand. Thats why its cloudy.

Fishrme- start a new thread and i'll try to answer any questions you have about proper kalk dosing.
