A friend was looking at my tank today and noticed a tiny fish swimming around in the spines of my sea urchin. It turned out to be a baby Cardinal. I am assuming that there were probably more babies than one....but I don't see any more. I think this one got lucky that he took shelter in the sea urchin. I took him out and put him down in my refugium? What's the best way to care for a baby Cardinal? Will he eat cyclop-eeze. Hope he makes it.

Jim,

Start up a batch of baby brine shrimp to start feeding. I would start mine on three feedings a day up until the ten day mark. That is when the fry use all of their reserves. You can try mixing the frozen cyclops in with it but you may have to swirl it around to trigger a feeding response. I had to starve my fry when they were older to wean them off of the baby brine. The male will release the fry over a couple nights so you may get some more fry. Did you notice if one of your cardinals went off food? The male will usually have a tell tale bull dog look in the mouth area since he's holding the eggs/fry.

Good luck, let me know if you need anymore help.

wow

Wow! I just went and looked at my Cardinals and the male has a HUGE mouth. I wonder how many are in there. Should I try to catch him and put him in my refugium so the other fish don't try to eat the babies? Will the other fish try to eat the babies? i have a Vlamingi tank, bicolor Angel, a big blennie, and a tomato clown.

In the wild they often release their babies into the spines of urchins for protection.

If you try and net him out, he will more than likely spit out the rest of the fry which on one hand will make it easier for you to round them all up at one time.

Anyone interested in buying my breeding pair of Bangai's for $50? I had these pair for over 3 years, and I'm in the process of reducing my bio load for my 120. So far they bred over 5 times. I gave the frys to LFS (Fishland, Global, and Keith at Aquatic) If no one is interested, I'm selling them to either Planet Fish, Tropical Village, or Aquatic Center this Sunday. They are getting ready to breed again. Here's some pics from the last batch about 8 months ago.

That is so totally cool! Since you know they're successfully breeding, why not let the fry hang in the urchin and let nature take its course this time around, just to see if they'll make it on their own? I've seen pics of that big black urchin of yours, so my bet is on the fry surviving. :D
