Probly nothing :) I just like the way they look. They are like DSB's some people say they are great and remove nutrients and some people say they are just for looks and don’t remove nutrients fast enough to make a difference.

firemarshalbill, they do remove nutrients but are not as efficient as caulerpa algae.. i posted a link from reefkeeping magazine in another mangrove thread, but i'm feeling lazy right now. if you go there, you'll find an article about it.

Mangroves remove nutrients very well but not very efficiently. The roots of the mangrove are what does the nutrient uptake but if you compare the root system of the mangrove to some caulerpa, the caulerpa would blow the mangrove out of the water. I do agree that the mangroves look cool but that's about it :)
