Hi all. :) I'm a new member of MARSH :) but have had a mini-reef 30 gal for about 2 years. Just moved up to a 75 gal Oceanic tank -- cycling now and it came with a typical wet/dry bioballs sump (Sealife Systems 125). Tank has about 100lbs of Fiji live rock and about 90 lbs of live sand to a depth of about 3-4 inches.

I have been researching the use of bioballs :? and have come to the conclusion (based on this site and reef central) that they are not needed with my LR and LS and may ultimately prevent me from having a zero nitrate environment. Ultimately, I plan to have coral and fish: softies, SPS and various reef fish. I' like to utilize the Sealife as a sump, so my questions are as follows:
1). I'm one week into the cyle. Should I simply remove the bioballs en-mass now and be done with them?
2). If yes to number one, what should I replace them with? If I just take them out, the pipe that performs the water return that trickles over the bioballs will simply drop water down into the lower sump area. Should I put live rock or some other item into into that side of the sump? Live rock will be too heavy on the plastic ledge in the Sealife sytem -- should i take out the plastic ledge and put something on the bottom of one side of the sump?
3). Currently the sump sounds like Niagra Falls! Suggestions?

Thanks in advance to my new friends at Marsh. I'll certainly appreciate your advice. :p :p :p

Either post pics or give the model number of your sump so we know what you are dealing with. You may be able to convert your wet dry to a sump/refuge.

I built a sump\refugium out of a 20 gal tank and simply removed my old converted wet dry. It cost me around $70 for the tank, glass, professional cutting, and silicone.

Start here http://www.melevsreef.com

It should provide an idea for plans and what your getting into. I also use the bulb he recommends for lighting your macro algae.
