I had a slight overflow issue while on vacation. My coast to coast overflow lost suction (it has done it a couple times a year) and thus the water level crept up. Water started thru the overflow, as it should, but I have an unglued joint that allowed it to drip down for a few hours. I am thinking that it fried my MP10 pump controller. Its lights are acting all whacky.

I unplugged it and then possed the two halves apart. There is a single component that is definately toast. Its scortched. Its a small rectangular black part that is one of a row of 10 or so. It looks like a voltage regulator to me. My plan is to identify, purchase, then remove and resolder that part. I have soldering irons and solder. I do not have a solder remover. So....

If there is anyone out there who does this stuff frequently, I'd love to get your opinion. I was going to bring it to EPO and see if they have the part, if radio shack does not.

You'd have to look at the part and see if there is a number on it. It is highly unlikely for anyone in houston to have this part. You probably fired more than one part. There's a good chance the microprocessor got damaged as well.

That being said, the manufacturer is usually pretty good about working with you on something like this. As long as you don't lie about what happened they seem impressed by it and give you a deal. I've seen it a couple times on reefcentral.

I agree, talk to the manufacturer. Just because a component looks like a voltage regulator doesn't mean it is. Many board designers choose parts that have similar package outlines as other components and also now with custom IC's/parts they share a common pin arrangement and package outline (TO-220 or T-100 as example) but are totally custom parts with internal part numbers screened to the component (that is what we do at my company). You might get lucky and it be a common part that they can cross over with something though.

I studied it some more, and deemed it to be beyond my ability. Monday morning, I called ecotech marine to see what they had on offer. I ordered an upgraded controller for $65.

The part looks like the pic above minus the portion with the hole in it. It also has the middle pin trimmed. It has the following markings:

ON with a circle around it, I would guess meaning ON Semiconductor. It is also marked with "916" and "3150G". I've already ordered the new part, but I'd like to know what this thing is. Its one of siz in a row.

There was another set of solders on the back that looked to have overheated, or at least corroded somehow. That was the other thing that stopped the repair line of action.

Thanks for the info., though.

BTW, I helped oldmantran solder up his LEDs. He's a nice guy. I live about 3 miles from him, so it was easier than him driving to Santa Fe.
