So the other day I decided it was time to clean out an old 5.5 gallon tank my daughter had in her bedroom. She had a fish in it that died like 2 months ago and I just now got the tank out of her room. LOL.

I was in the kitchen cleaning the tank, rock, plants etc. and was wondering what I should do with the tank. I was going to clean it up and just stick it out in the garage for later use. While cleaning the pink gravel she had I started thinking....hmm.... I have some left over sand in the garage from my 100 gal. Then I though, well damn, I have some live rock that's been sitting on the garage floor for a couple months now. I never used it and it was just sitting there all dry and dead.

Then it hits me! A nano tank! So I put away all the freshwater stuff and go out and bring in the sand and now dead rock. I clean the sand in RO water real good and then rinse it with some saltwater I had on hand. I rinse off the dead rock and put it all together. She already had an AquaClear 50 filter so I was good there. She also had a heater, and glass top.

The only thing I have purchased so far for this build is two stunner strips for lights. I bought one 453nm Actinic Blue and one 8000k white/453nm Blue strip. This gives me a total of 30 blue LED's and 18 white. I didn't buy the reflectors because they weren't in stock. Once I get a pair I'll decide if I like the color combo or not. As for now, I just have the strips sitting on the glass top. I need to figure out some way to mount them in a fixture or something.

So for now, I'm just going through a cycle and trying to decide what I want to keep in this tank. Here's a couple quick pics so far. The water just cleared up and the glass is still a little dirty from the sand settling. I'll take more pics as I go. Enjoy!

disregard the blue tape and cardboard taped to the table. I'm trying to keep my new puppy from running under the table! Haha

Looks good Mark! My daughter wants a small tank like that in her room, but I know I would be taking care of it.

How about bending or gluing some acrylic to make a fixture? I have some textured black acrylic that would make a good fixture IMO. Just bend it in a "U" and glue on some ends for legs to support it above the tank.

Thanks man. I have this tank sitting on my end table by "my" spot on the couch. It's in the same room as my big tank to make maintenance easy. My daughter already said its still hers LOL.

Thats actually exactly what I was thinking. Bending or glueing plastic/acrylic to make some type of fixture. I'm just not very handy or creative when it comes to that kind of stuff. I should draw something up and see if I can get it made.

I was thinking something like this. It should not be too hard to make. I may play with my scrap and see how it looks when I heat it up and bend it vs cutting and gluing straight pieces.

That could work. I was thinking more like a traditional light strip that has two legs on each end with some angle feet. Here's something I threw together real quick now that I'm at work. Not sure how easy this would be. The length from foot to foot will depend on the width of the tank's top trim. I have this at about 16". The height of the legs are at 4". For the light channel itself the width could be whatever we want for the number of stunner strips that will be placed inside it with a little extra to tuck all the wires in.
