What are your thoughts on a sump with sand/crushed coral or a bare bottom? Thank You.

I wouldn't do crushed coral, but a lot of people have 4-6" of sand in one section of the sump. Can't really say how effective it would be.

I have 7" of sand with macro growing over it in my refugium, both chaeto and caluerpa are growing there. I have not had detectable nitrates since I started it. Just make sure the flow is low enough for the life to not get washed away.

100-150gph max in mine. Never a nitrate. Life crawling everywhere. Some days I look at it more than the tank.
