Ok, today I got most of the stand frame build and got the shelf that my frag tank will rest on put together. The display will be a 90 AGA RR. Plumbed into the system will be a 30 Gallon frag tank. If this looks tall to you it is, it's a 50 inch stand :D . The sump is currently on order.

90 Gallons [US] = 751.0737698 Pounds.... i would seriously consider adding extra bracing on the corners to avoid disaster. it might hold for a while but if it begins to bow.... also consider painting everything with a sealant paint inside the stand so water cant be soaked up by the wood. there are a bunch of really good threads on this board regarding stand builds. keep us updated :)

The Tank is 24 inches tall.

The inside of the stand will have a nice thick coat of Killz. I still have a bit more bracing to add to the stand, but I'm not worried about it moving/bowing.

My fiance's short too, I'll probably have to build a moveable platform that matches the stand for everyone else, and for maintenance, but like she told me when I was designing the stand, "it's your tank, build it so you can see it". The frag tank's at the perfect height for veiwing. I like the look of tall stands, and everything that can fit into them.

Hey,
Who you calling short? :-x

My stand is 43 ", I wished I had made it 2 more inches maybe! I am 5' 8",
so say 45 " would have been perfect for me. So if I take that math and add your stand height you should then be about 6" 1" and I think it would the perfect height for you. How tall are you? I think she is right you need to build it to your height.

I am 6'2" and my ceiling is 12' so I think what you have is a cool idea and I may copy it for my next build. Keep the pics coming. What about twist or leaning? I mean what will happen if the stand becomes off balance and starts to lean? The taller it is the greater the effect of 1 degree. I don't see any corner braces to prvent it or are you going to install the skin in such a way that it will provide this support?

I am 6' 1", so yes, it's perfect. I'm going to be adding more braces over the next few days, with a water test on friday w/ an old 75 gal. I'm banking on the fact that the 30 gallon frag tank in the center will provide a bit extra support in the center.

Awesome ... my math then worked out and it is going to be great for you!

You mentioned building a paltform for viewing and working on the tank. I am using a three steep stool which puts me up about 2 feet in the air. I would not want a 2 foot platform. You might start looking out for a good deal on a tall step stool each time you go shopping. You will need it I promise!

Ok, the stand's frame is complete. The cross beam on the rear will be held in place by a stainless steel plate and 2 1/2 inch wood screws, then covered by a thick coat of Killz for safe measure. I will cover the frame with 1/4 inch Oak plywood. My current plan is to stain a nice dark. On Friday I will put a 75 Gal on the stand and test out to see if it bows at all.

Not to hijack, but I think your stand will be just fine. I built mine basically the same way for my 55g. I weigh 245lbs and I jumped up and down on mine and it didn't budge. BTW, thanks for the 75g I plan to use for my sump.

Personally, I think it's funny how much you guys fret over your stands. One of my 300's sits on a stand made basically from 1X3's and it sat fine. The other is made with plywood on the sides and top and made from 5 - 1X4" braces in the front and back. The wood is alot stronger than most folks give credit for. I'm not saying you should compete to see who can make a stand from the least amount of wood or try to hold up a 55 reef with toothpicks, just don't worry so much about it because I have seen alot worse.

And please don't take this as something negative because that is an awesome stand, and I like the double tier look that gives more diversity.

I'm more worried about bowing due to height, I'm relatively sure the tank won't move, I'm just being cautious.
