Ok, I just bought my first S/W tank this week. It is a 75 Gal. I have been doing research for about 3 months prior to buying the tank. Durring my vacation this week I used Citysearch.com and found 37 Pet stores between Richmond Houston Spring Sealy and Austin. I visited EVERY one. It took 5 days to hit them all. Of the Houston stores, I only found 4 that I will return to, out of a total of 19 fish stores.

I am serious about doing this right, and getting only stuff that will not put my fish in any danger, but information is hard to find. I have bout about $100 in books in the past month or so, and read each of them from front to back, and still need more information.

Anyone having good information links please post them here.

I want to get as much information on Cycling and set-up as possible for right now. I want to start cycling this weekend. Any other information that can be offered will be much appreciated.

Also, I have found much debate on Temp and Salinity. I would love to hear what everyone is using so that I may have a better idea of what I will use.

Al

EDIT: LMAO I just saw your scrolling sponsor list. The stores in Houston that I will return to are all listed on sponsor pages. I was VERY impressed with Darrell Pierce at Village Tropical, and the cleanliness and knowledge I found at both Village and Planet Fish.

Ok according to the link below I have deducted that my operating temp/salinity should be about 82-84 and 36.5-37. That is a bit hotter than what I have heard before. What do you guys use.

Temp shoudl pretty much range from 76-83 but you want it to be consistent an dnot having it fluctuating too much.

If you plan on doing a reef tank, I suggest getting Eric Borneman's book.

As far as temp and salinity, I keep my tanks at 78F and 32ppm(~1.023-1.024 sg)

There are lots of debates on temperature - I think anywhere from 75-82 is pretty safe. Although you see people going higher or lower (usually higher), I don't feel comfortable pushing the extremes. You can run a tank at 84 and be successful, but you have little room for error. I use a chiller and keep my tank at 79, but if I didn't have a chiller and could maintain 81-82, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Salinity - IMO, there's not much argument. As close to natural sea level as possible, which means 1.024-1.026 for most people. There have been studies done showing that keeping fish at lower salinities causes kidney damage over the long haul. The only other reasons people use lower salinities are to help prevent parasites (but it doesn't, unless you get down to 1.010) and to save money on salt mix.
