I just bought a Cannon EOS Rebel T5 along with an EF 75-300mm lens. I have always just used my phone camera for point and shoot photos, so this is all new to me. I wanna be able to get these real close up macro shots of my corals. Can anyone maybe guide me in the right direction on what program I can download for free or buy to be able to edit them. Also any tips on how to improve my photography skill would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jay

You'll probably want to look into dedicated macro lenses like the 60mm or 100mm.

The software that comes with the camera is all you really need for great up close shots. You just have to crop and zoom in a bit with the software. They get pretty detailed as you zoom in, and I typically try to zoom in as much as I can before things get "pixely." (All in the software).

Now, by going with what tvu is suggestion, you can really get in there! After goofing with the software a bit, you can clean things up and really zoom in to show off the piece you are focusing on. Like this one:

Just a random example, but the original actually shows the whole frag rack it's sitting on, with other frags. The above was with my 100mm macro.

By the way, the pics you took with the standard lens that comes with the T5 look very good! You should be happy with the way they turned out. They are a bit saturated though, but that will get better with more practice. I'm definitely FAR from a pro, but I do love my Canon's! :) I'd like to get a Nikon, but I already have a bunch of Canon lenses. Maybe when I strike oil one day... ;)

Software can only do so much. Without good data, manipulation of the data will be limited. Here's an example with a 60mm macro unedited

Keep in mind these photos are taken by an average photographer. Here's other examples with the same lens. These are all handheld shots.

Again unedited. They'd look better with some cropping and editing.

Yeah the software that comes with the camera, prolly is all I need in my situation and for what I wanna do. Im guessing a tripod will help a ton on clarity, but i did crop and auto correct a few pix and I almost like the way they look. Thanks for the info tvu and Flipside, I will look into a 100mm lens. thanks for sharing yalls pix they look great!

Thanks
Jay

You're welcome, bro! And thanks for the compliment! I actually don't have any zoas anymore, but I was sure to get some pics before I gave them back to the buddy that I got them from. Here's another shot with my 100mm macro. This one was of the little filter feeder in the Bam Bams.

It's another part of this crazy, expensive hobby. :) But, how can one not love it? :D

Nice, Jay!

One tip would be to purchase Adobe Lightroom and shoot in RAW instead of JPG.
The software will make organizing, viewing and editing your pics so much easier and by shooting RAW you will have many more pixels to play with and the camera won't make a lot of arbitrary editing decisions for you. The biggest plus for shooting our tanks is adjusting the white balance of the raw image. Adjusting the white balance of the jpg doesn't work as well.

I like that acro in the first pic and the mille in the third.

Ya, no worries... i knew it was you and was going to reply in the other guys thread with your info but you beat me to it.
Unfortunately I had to get that sheetrock up asap. But I've got your number for next time.
I'll shoot you a text tomorrow. My phone is in the bedroom charging and the wife is asleep. lol

Let me know if you need help with lightroom.

oh, and the ac guy worked out and I really liked that electrician.
Probably going to call on him for a small project in the kitchen after i'm done with all this fish stuff.
