I recently transferred all my stuff from my 80 gallon to a 40 gallon tank. In the process I broke my Tidepool II overflow so now all I have on the 40 gallon is current to keep the water moving. I ordered another overflow and I am going to hook my Tidepool II back up without the Biowheel and I am just going to have a skimmer in the sump. My question is this, on the Tidepool II there are several trays that you can put media etc in. If I just put regular fluffy padding in one of the trays will that cause another cycle to occur, or is that only if you use carbon, or a Biowheel etc? Before when I had the Tidepool up on my 80 gallon I was using the Biowheel and just changed the padding if it got too nasty. Dont know why I thought it was ok then, but not now. Hmm. Well if you can answer my question that would be really cool. Thanks

If you mean will the filter media grow colonies of bacteria that are necessary to perform the biological filtration then the answer is yes. The bacteria in your live rock will quickly spread to the filter media and begin to grow. Your main reason for the filter media should be to catch your excess food and waste solids for easy removal. Do you plan on using macro Algae in your sump or just your live rock? I would use both. The bio wheel is supose to help colonize anaerobic bacteria that helps to control ammonia and nitrites. Your live rock should be doing this function as well. Others here can shed more light....

The bacteria growth will occur on the filter floss, but it will not trigger another cycle. That is already complete, I assume, and therefore will not reoccur. You would have to do something drastic to cause additional ammonia for another cycle to occur (killing some fish, putting dead fish in the tank...or, more likely, overfeeding).

Now, I have never used a tidepool before and I don't know how large the biowheel is on the unit, but as Abran said the bacteria load on the substrate and live rock will be mor ethan enough to maintain the tank as the bacteria grows on the filter floss.

Ok, got the tidepool II running again, put the fluffy padding in one of the trays. One thing is just driving me absolutely crazy. That is since the biowheel is no longer there the water is falling from the trays to the bottom of the sump which sounds like someone peeing constantly. Anyone know of anything on this green earth of ours to stop the sound?? I would put the biowheel back in, but it has been sitting out dry for the past week and I know it is toast. Thanks for any help.

Nevermind, just put a bunch more padding at the bottom of the sump, now no noise. I guess I am a newbie. Oh well.
