Anyone on the Seabrook/League City side of town a Nikon user? I have a D40 that I got from my brother a couple years ago. I have the lens that it comes with as well as a 55-200 lens.

I am interested in learning the basics of the camera and beginner photography.

I have watched youtube videos and googled for how to's and help in the past and i never *clicked* for me.

I thought that maybe if someone could show me, with my camera....I might begin to catch on.

I really want to be able to take decent pictures of my tank, but I assume I will need a different lens for those awesome macro shots you guys are taking.

I use Canon but the basic principles are the same, just not near you lol. If you wanted to come over some time I could go over some settings and techniques with you.

i appreciate that. I will get with you and set it up.

also, do I need to purchase a "macro" lens for the aquarium shots? or is the stock 18-55 lens sufficient?

If your 18-55 won't focus as close as you would like, then yes you need a macro lens.
The best value in a macro for nikon is the Tamron 90mm.

Hence the reason I didn't buy a macro lens for years! So awesome to have one now though. I say play around with what you have for now, if you don't get what you like then consider getting another lens. Macro lenses can sometimes be tricky for someone new to photography though, given their extremely shallow depth of field, especially with using it when not on a tripod.

Porkchop, I'm in Webster and shoot with an older Nikon D200, I'm no expert but could give you some pointers that have helped me shoot better. If you have time this weekend, swing by my apartment to talk shop. Let me know.

Also before spending the money on the mico lens you can rent one from lensrental.com (I think that is the name of it). GF rented 2 different lenses to see which one she liked more.
