Fish Land....ask for it by name, and they'll go in the back and get it for you.

That's what we're using :)

Fish Land sells it for $40, but Aquatic World on Jones Rd. sells it for $45. It will be marked $60, but their chemicals are always 25% off. Since it costs me $5 in tolls to go to the stores across town, I usually just pick it up there.

teehee........well, that is a good point, but if we are out and about already, we swing by FL and get it when we're close to needing some more. Of course, if I'm in dire straights and need it like yesterday, and that's all I need, Aquatic World is a better choice. I've popped in there to grab some immediate need items, since they're so close.

Same here Karen. I really don't care much for the store, but they are oh so convenient.

But I was at FishLand last weekend, so I picked up a bucket while I was there - in case I need to make a lot of saltwater in the next couple of weeks. :D

I'm using Instant Ocean... Why are you switching from Kent to Oceanic? Is there a big difference?

If you are using Instant Ocean for a fish only tank, that's fine, but their formulation does not have enough calcium, etc. for corals in my opinion.

I've tried just about everything, and I absolutely love the way the Oceanic mixes up. It instantly dissolves and has a good balance of the chemicals needed for corals.

Kevin (ReefALot) uses a special kind, but I don't remember the name of it or where he gets it. It comes in small boxes.

Ok looks like I wont be switching right now until I find the right salt.

Kevin told me a while ago that he was getting brown film/diatoms on his tank after using Oceanic. BUt now others on RC have confirmed this even after testing for silicates on their RO/DI unit. I sure dont want brown junk all over my sand and rocks.

The reason why i was going to change is because of the inconsistency Kent has been providing lately with their salt batches. The Mg and Ca are low. I never had this problem before with Kent, but recenlty noticed it and am very dissapointed by it. Someone on RC stated that Kent is now owned by the same people as IO and Coralife. You know what that means!!

I recenlty raised my Mg from 1000 to 1230 with the the past 2 wks, but i feel that supplenting all the time is not necessary and should be provided by a good salt brand.

Here's my post on RC about Kent:

Ed, you didn't receive my replies last nite? i didn't get some error messages when sent the replies to you..
anyway, most lfs in Houston now carry Oceanic. I got mine from Global for $40 and VTF for $45. Also saw this salt in City Pets too.

I observed some brown algea on the sand bed a while back and thought that caused by Oceanic due to the Kevin's comments.. So i switched back to I.O for 2 wks now .. doesn't see much diff. except my Nitrate test results on I.O was 0.2 ppm compared to 0.5ppm (Salifert kit) - which were very close anyway.

Kevin told me recently he found his RO/DI having silicate content and may be the cause to the algea not the salt. And I noticed while i still used Oceanic is that I got good sps growth, so i'm tempting to switch back w/ Oceanic again

Qu,

I got your emails finally. Hotmail was down.

Have you tried Tropic Marine? Im going by Sbermans tank and also by some other reefers who also liked this salt brand. Im in search of the ultimate salt brand :)

As for kevin thinking it was his RO/DI, that may not be the case is others on RC had the same problem. He recently changed his cartridges, so we will see if it gets better.

I think it might be the Oceanic salt. Another Marsh Reef member just PM me about the brown algae on the sand after switch to Oceanic salt.

i've been looking for instant ocean for awhile. can't seem to find a large bucket of it anywhere. i don't particularly want to go to aquarium world either ('cause I think they carry it, but would rather support a sponsor store). if anyone sees a bucket, can please i hear from you?

Did you call John at Global for the Instant Ocean?

Hey all

I have a few things Id like to add about Oceanic salt and changing salt in general.

I purchased a huge bucket..forget how much..at Rish R Us on 242 near Conroe. It was $50

Oceanic salt is great from my experience. My best friend and I both use this brand and have been since both our Tanks were set up in March. Weekly 10% waterchanges have kept our Calcium levels very high. Im tend to be lazy about water changes but my friend has actually had to slow his down a bit due to very high Ca levels. Ive read quite a few posts from other users of Oceanic salt on Reefcentral that have had the same results.

When changing salt, algae blooms are expected.
