It sounds pretty cool, but still rather expensive. $199 for a 4way and 379$ for the 8 ways, then you also need to spend $100+ for the pump and another $100 for the revolutions.. With that much money, i'd rather spend it on a 3000 gph Tunze stream w/ flow control/timer!

A 1" Sea Swirl will cost you about $180.

The 4-way unit doesn't look too bad compared to the cost of that.

A 4 way with revolutions and a sufficiently sized pump would run ~$400. With this you get 4 rotating heads that can be placed in varied locations throughout the tank and that will supply up to 3000gph (depending on the pump used).

True, the Tunze is a very nice system, but even so it is still only a single stream. The great thing about Tunze is that it can be pulsed by its controller. And for $362, it is not bad.

Which, is better? Well, that is for everyone to decide for themselves. I personally like both, but the temptation to have 4 rotating heads is pretty hard to turn away from. I already have 3 SeaSwirls running on three separate pumps. Another 4 rotating heads.....think of the possibilities :D.

Just some utility cost comparision:

For a 3000 gph Tunze w/ wave control (~$370):
Pump power consumption: 45w ==> ~ $0.13/d, or $4/ month or $47/yr (assuming running continously 24hrs/d, and $0.12/ KWh for electricity).

For a 4 ways w/ revolutions and 3000 gph pump (whole system costs ~$400)

Take the Mag Drive 36 model as an example (~3000 gph @ 4 ft head):
Power consumption = 380 W ===> ~$1.1/d, or $33/ mo or $400/ yr

So the saving w/ the Tunzee option is $350/yr ==> enough to pay for itself in one year!

But still the Tunze system is a static , the water only flows in the direction the pumps are pointed.

The Tunze will cover a lot of area in your tank due to the big outlet nozzle (2 1/2"??) w/ a huge flow, and w/ the control you can make it pulsing to the seconds. I think for a 180gal tank, you only need 2 Tunze to cover most area in your tank - 3 would be perfect.. however the pump costs will be tremendous. But as shown previously, you can recoup the costs of one Tunze pump in just one yr as compared to the OceansMotions. I saw some 180gal tank w/ 2 3000 gph Tunze before - and they move EVERYTHING in the tank! Imagine the movement of 6000 gph of water movement - not including another ~1000 gph from the return pump - I'm sure you'll have good water flow at every corner in the tank.

One HUGE, HUGE drawback for the Tunze pump is that the pump looks so darn BULKY in the tank - you can't miss it :D

But it still doesnt give you random water movement. Just constant movement, its comparing apples to oranges.

That's what the flow control for. It allows random pulsings and random speeds on the pump. So 2 Tunze at 2 diff. corners can turn on and off at diff. time/ speed randomly==> random water movement. Of course you can't direct 2 pumps to many directions/ corner as the MotionsOceans, but the powerful flow streams (3000 gph) hitting on each other at 2 oppsosing sides should provide enough wave power to move water to diff areas of the tank.

That wins the debate for me but I have to agree the Tunzes are ugly. In the next couple of years I am sure there will be some better stuff on the market.

apples and oranges

How does it compare if you use the H/D 4 way at $279 (forget the revolutions, the Tunze's don't move either) then pump 9000GPH through it.

Sounds like you would need 3 Streams to do the same job but still only hit 3 out of 4 locations in the tank, if you pulse the Streams then the capacity is less.

Add two 360 revolutions $60 and now you get to 18 different locations.

I will not knock other product but will ask that comparisons are at least fair
