Im getting ready to add a 20 gallon sump to my 55 gallon tank. It is not drilled so it will have to be a hob over flow. What suggestion for overflows and what pump should i get? This part is new to me and i don't want to buy the wrong stuff

If the tank is not tempered I would just drill it. I have DIY kits available on my site (buildinganobsession.com). If you want to stick with an HOB overflow I am working on a low profile auto restart design but it probably won't be ready for prime time for at least a month.

Any 1" diameter overflow will work. If you want the extra "peace of mind" get a CPR overflow with the aqualifter pump that makes sure the siphon doesn't break. Even though siphons can't break unless tampered with, just an extra safety feature. 1" drain maxes out at roughly 600gph drain. If you were to get a 800gph pump or less, by the time the flow reaches over the 5+ feet of tubing (head height), it will be less than 600gph. For a tank that size, you don't need max flow through your sump, just get a 600gph pump. Even if it only pumps 350-400gph at the top, it will drain at the same rate, so as long as its less than 600gph, you're good
