Anybody go out there recently? I wonder if it's still too early in the summer... Although I guess technically it is still spring.

I went down there tonight and had no luck. I've read the thread sticky on how to catch them, but one thing wasn't clear to me is whether you catch them in the open surf on the jetties or whether you have to catch them in little pools of water between the rocks. The posts seem to suggest not catching them in the open surf andbinstead finding the pools between rocks, and given that my net was too large to do that, I am assuming thatbis why I caught none. Could someone please clarify exactly where you catch them on the jetties?

Also, could someone please describe the best type of net to use? I tried using a large minnow net with about a 6 foot pole and it just won't get down in the holes between rocks.

I'm going back to try again on Sunday night, so could someone please help clarify these issues so i don't strike out again?

I feed them to my wrasse, but they're a great cleanup crew and they're known to eat the pest aiptasia.

To catch them, you do dip between the rocks, where there are pockets of less turbulent water. You can not use a large net. You need to use a small net; the one we use is about 2ft long, and the net itself is about 6x10in. You can get them at Academy for about $8. There website is down so I can't show you what they look like, but the "head" is made of thick aluminum bar stock, which is actually ideal because as you dip the nets between the boulders, you drag them up against the rock face. The metal head protects and prolongs the life of the net.

The shrimp are most active right after sunset.

This is the extendable net you need to use and can get it at Bass Pro Shop.

I have better luck catching them on the outer faces of the rocks (the sides facing the water), not between the rocks.

Kat was kind enough to donate a good handful to me a while ago, I can tell you the galveston peps are hardy little buggers, they've survived about 6 months in an outdoor rock curing bin and show no signs of thinning out, awesome little critters. Word of warning though, they should really be sump dwellers as I've had a couple of peps go rogue on me and start tearing apart my lps :-(

to be honest, the ones we catch in the gulf are not as good in a tank. the ones in the store SHOULD be from the pacific and it seems like they are less inclined to devour lps. i have lost several acan frags, all my frogspawn, and half a hammer coral colony to them. I also lost all aptasia and mojanos, but it came at a cost. they make great sump dwellers or something to put in a frag tank. include them with zoas and sps, and they will spawn constantly feeding coral frags. these guys ate my gbta as well..

I had the exact opposite experience. My Galveston peppermint shrimp don't touch any of my hammer/frogspawn, and especially not any of my RBTA/GBTA. And I would dump them in my tanks by the hundreds.

it took mine a few weeks to start eating, but once they did.... damn... lol i used the ole flashlight at night to catch them. when the lights went out mine would withdraw and that was when they would do it. some people have polyps extended throughout the night. those people do not have problems. they do not mess with duncans from anyone's account. if the bta is hosted by clowns, they should defend it. just be careful with them.
