Dang...EcoTech were you thinking. The radion pro is around $850 per fixture. All you get is 32 leds and some programmable functionality which I don't care for much. All I want is the darn lights to come ON/OFF and of course want my corals to be happy. :outtahere:

Don't get me wrong. I love toys but buying 3-4 fixtures...could be kid college funds. ;)

I agree that the price is high but you definitely get a lot of features. The 32
LEDs are way better than the 36 led fixture that I made. My fixture was top bin XTE royal blues and XML T6 whites too. My DIY was running at 90% power on the blues and 75% power on the whites. My pro's are running at 55% and at 60% I was burning coral even after acclimating for a month. The numbers don't make sense but the radions power pack way more punch.

That being said if you are only going to turn your lights on and off you are probably right that the pro's are not for you. I have a lot of fun programming all sorts of spectrums through the day and watching colors change in the tank. Doesn't sound like that interests you though but it may for others.

Soon Diesel will go PRO led's too!

If all you want is the lights to come on/off, I would stick with mh/t5 fixtures.
Yeah the bulbs and electricity are a bit more but in the grand scheme, not much more. If it is too much for you, you are in the wrong hobby.
And IMHO it's still the best for coral growth.

Personally, I LOVE all the programming, the control, the slow ramping up and down, the ability to change spectrums without buying new bulbs, sharing graphs with others, etc.
And you gotta love the company standing behind them.

Good point. Why you switching anyways? Don't you run 400w mh with no heat issue? If I were in your shoes I would stick with that.

Dang man...why are you getting all worked up. I remember when you started with your 46/g few years back. I have been in this hobby for a long time and had numerous tanks and burned thoursands. I was just talking in general. ;) I undersrtand you guys are EcoTech fan boys but it's all good. Don't like my post...ignore and move on...

For a company to charge that much, for few readily available LEDS, driver, lense, and cheap fixture...that's what I don't get.

Dark,

I will never change from MH - got no issues at all. I was just venting.

Huh? lol, not getting worked up. That's just a big reason for many to make the switch, but I don't think it's really that big of a deal. And I was speaking in generalities, not you directly. ;)

Honestly, I wouldn't have switched if I didn't hook up with Ecotech. I loved my mh/t5 combo fixture. Now brian has it! lol

Yeah, it's a lot of cash and of course LED are the new thing so that doesn't help, but I do honestly love all the features that you don't seem to care about and that's a big deal. It's part of what makes the Vortechs so expensive, too. Just like with cars... you can buy a corolla to get from A to B or if you want all the tech and fancy frills you can buy an E-class. Not worth it to many. Some don't want to live without it.

And that 46g was a disaster!!!!

I agree that they are expensive and not for everyone, but disagree that they are the same as DIY fixtures. I did the DIY thing and with that best available parts and there is a big difference between the performance of the radions and the LEDs in my tank. Is that difference worth the money, maybe not.

I think the big thing is not so much that people like d2mini and I are fan boys of Ecotech but we care as much about the esthetics of the equipment and overall system as we do the livestock inside. Many don't care at all and DIY is fine There is nothing wrong with that. Ecotech is just filling a niche as any company would.

The pro is the top of the line product too. The first and second gen radions are just as capable. Picking on the pro is like asking why would anyone ever spend money on a corvette when you could get a Malibu? 😄

Since you know a little about electronic components what makes the fixture more powerful and effective than a DIY.

My number one goal is esthetics and happy live stock. I like EcoTech products such as the MP40/MP60 which are reasonably priced. I do own both pumps by the way and you seen my tank.;)

That's why I'm asking what makes it so awesome. Is it the programmability???? OK I see your analogy. I never owned/driven a Malibu...guess you have not seen my garage. It's all good I get it. ;)

I'm a little confused John. If you will never change from MH, why start a thread complaining about equipment you never intend to buy?

For many many people Radions are worth every penny. Myself included. I love everything about them. They are the #1 LED unit on the market right now. Even at a grand a unit they can't stock the shelves fast enough. EcoTech packaged pretty much everything an LED user could want in a single fixture. I personally know a few people not happy with their DIY units and are switching to Radions. I'll be upgrading my Gen 1's to Pro's soon enough.

If you are in the market for LED's the Radion is the unit to buy. If you never intend to leave MH then don't complain about what we are spending our money on. ;)

There is nothing wrong with gaining knowledge. It's a discussion forum. I just wanted to know why it cost so much. That's all. Like I said before, if you don't like sharing information move on and ignore thread.

All you are telling me above is the marketability of the product...I can google that info. ;)
