My wife and I are planning our honeymoon(finally!) to Hawaii, who has been there and were would you recommend diving or snorkeling?

(Or any other cool spots you found too!)

Brain, my cousin and her hubby are stationed with the navy in Hawaii. I'll send her an e-mail and get the good spots for you!

Thanks Stephanie, that would be cool!

Niko5, I'll bring you some tang. Why you want me to buy a container of tang and bring it back I'm not sure. Should be much cheaper at HEB here.

When we went on our honeymoon (Maui), we snorkelled right off the shore @ Kannapali (sp?) beach. Also went snorkeling @ Lanai. Both places were great.
I wish I could remember the name of it, but there's a big crater or something like that out there, you gotta take a boat to it , supposed to be really popular spot to go snorkeling/scuba diving.

Which island(s) are you going too?
If you stay on Maui, dont' drive yourself to Hana. If you wanna go to it, either take a Van tour or a helicopter tour to it. And if you ride in one of those limo vans to it, don't sit all the way in the back, we were both feeling nauseas by the time we got to Hana (thank god the way back was a helicopter ride)

OK, looking forward to your report boosted!

So does anyone know a good travel agent in the Houston area? Planning a 3 island trip is a little daunting!

Just got back guys! and i must say that the diving there is exquisite! Absolutely amazing. Turtles, white tip sharks, hawaiian cleaner wrasse, picasso triggers, spotted morays, more butterflies than can be counted (they're the Sgt Majors of the islands for any of you carribean divers). Molokini is a great dive, good visibility, but can get a little mirky. The island itself acts like a giant ear and you can hear the humpback whales during the entire dive off in the distance. Next tank was a nice wreck dive called St Anthony's. 4 or 5 resident green sea turtles that are very friendly and not afraid of humans.

Mind you, this was all on maui, not the big island (hawaii).

Oh, and if you do go diving in maui, go with B&B. Awesome bunch of guys and a great trip. They let you dive, and then feed you!

Brian: I've been to Hawaii a bunch of times... here's my two cent's worth on where to go:

Maui has FAR better diving and snorkeling than Oahu... Wasted lots of money and time going diving off Oahu.

Hanauma Bay is the huge crater place you can go to snorkel near Waikiki (20 minutes by car or bus) but it's now lousy and you'll only see a few fish.

The big Island of Hawaii isn't that great of a place to stay, but there's a little known place about a half hour south of Kona (yes, where the coffee comes from!) called the steps of the sisters or something like that and it's absolutely breathtaking ... you'll have to rent your gear at Snorkel Bob's (famous place to rent snorkel stuff there) if you don't have your own as this spot has no "park" attached to it where there might be vendors.

One thing about diving... you do not need a diving certificate if you just want to try it out. All the dive boats sell a "beginner's dive" or a "resort dive" that's about five or ten bucks more than regular diving... and they teach you everything you need to know and take you down one on one. I've done resort dives in Australia on two trips, Hawaii once and once in Jamaica. If you do not already dive now and have the gear and the certificate, you should still try it. It's amazing, like swimming around in the finest aquarium you've ever seen in a MARSH member's home or office :)

For those of you who have snorkelled/dived in Maui and the Big Island, what cities do you recommend staying in? Also, any good/affordable hotels?

For Maui, we stayed in Wailea in the Kea Lani (farmont) hotel. Great area and close to the best diving spots (molokini, turtle point, St Anthony's). Lahaina is where the marriot is.

Hey all,

I just returned from Hawaii and had a blast snorkeling and scuba diving. The inside of Molokini crater on Maui was very nice, but I thought overrated. They did say the part that was ranked top ten dive sites in the world was the back wall, not the inside of the crater though. We did not get certified as planned, so we had to settle for the inside crater.

We went snorkeling off the big island and went to a cove on the NW side of the island. It was gorgeous and in my opinion much better looking than the inside of molokini crater(less damage).

We also snorkelled right off of the beach near our hotel. It wasn't as nice as the dive sites or the other place we snorkelled, but can't beat snorkeling from your hotel, so easy and free :)

Here is the hotel we stayed at that was by the snorkeling beach:
