Tell us about your experience with angels in a reef tank. I bought a coral beauty angel about 5 months ago and have not had any problems with corals or clams.

Anyone else?

reef safe angels

Ronnie, you have been very lucky. I know of no angel, including the Centropyge and Genianthus species, that are always reef safe.

I have a Rusty, Coral Beauty and a Singapore with no problems yet. if you keep them well fed they will not need to go after your corals IMO.

I have a dwarf flame and a yellow angel. No problems with them so far with corals. However, I have a twin-spot wrasse about 3 1/2 in. that turn over some of my small frags on LR. Any idea on how to stop him from doing that?

wrasse behavior

Hey Gus;

IMO that is typical wrasse behavior searching for food.
I had to trade in a dragon wrasse who could turn over small live rock!

good luck

At one time or another I have had a host of dwarf angels in my reef tanks along the way. I have yet to have any problems with them bothering my sps or clams. I have had flames, purple fireball, half black, coral beauty, and now have a false lemonpeel in my 120g and a Potter's angel in my 180g. I think what Dave suggests has a lot to do with them. I feed my fish not to the point of overfeeding but I feed them and gradually slow down to where they are not actively searching for food and whether this has anything to do with my luck with them I don't know. It sure has worked for me.

I do believe that there is going to be that one fish that is always going to be a coral nipper no matter what you do. I think the centropyge species are a beautiful fish to have in a reef setting but you do need to be careful. I have not yet tried any of the genicanthus species.

sue how often did you feed your angels initially, and then what kind of regular feeding did you slow it down to, to keep your angels from picking at your corals/clams?

anan, when I feed my fish I prepare it in a small cup with ZoeCon or Selcon whichever I have at the moment. I mix enriched frozen brine, mysis and 2 types of flake food, 1 spirulina and 1 Prime Reef. I feed the fish at one time til they slow down in eating. Thats when I back off and let them finish whats in the tank til I see all have had their fill. Thats what I meant by slowing down. They get the same meal 2 times daily. I slow down to the point where they are not as interested in feeding.

I am using the same method that Brad Ward of the DFW club used when I was at his house one time. He feeds a lot more than I do.

The lamarki{sp} angel is a genicanthus spp. and the female is quite drab compared to the male. I have seen several of these in reef tanks but again I bet it depends on the fish.

I generally have kept some kind of angel fish in my reef tanks over the years (asfur, imperator, regal, rock beauty, bi-color, pygmy, and flame). I find it really depends on the fish if it is going to eat your corals. I had one imperator that never touched corals that I had for 3 years before I traded him for a smaller one. Unfortunately, the second one liked to eat corals, alot.

I used to have a Bi-Color angel in my reef tank, but he constantly nipped at the brains, zo-polyps, and frogspawns...he went bye, bye. I also used to have a rock beauty, "raoul", in my tank with no problems at all, but I re-arranged my tank and gave him to Sue T (I did not see you mention Raoul in your post Sue, is he still around).

I keep a small regal in my reef tank with absolutely no problems for years now.

Just my two cents if anyone cares...

Hey Jeff, I care about your 2cents!!!

I didn't mention "raoul" cause they were talking about dwarf angels. :? Though he is still a dwarf only in size but of the big angel species. Yes, he is still around and doing good. My false lemonpeel no longer shows any interest in raoul. And vice versa.

I don't name my fish as this one came named, well except for "Fred" the gold stripe maroon clown but my sis named that fish.

Cool!!! Glad to know Raoul is doing good.

I also wanted to note...I used to have a flame angel that would pick at clams really bad. He also picked at brains... he too went bye bye...
