My aunt gave me a refractometer for a gift but the thing is she doesn't know which to buy so she bought me one that is in 'Brix' reading instead of salinity reading. My cheapo hydrometer read my salinity at 1.024 and the Brix refractometer read it at 4. Is this '4' the same as 1.024 if I use a salinity refractometer? The Brix refractometer only have whole number reading. Thank you

A brix refractometer is for measuring the sucrose, (sugar) concentration in an aqueous solution. This refratctometer isn't useful for measuring salinity. At least not directly. There may be some type of conversion, but I didn't find anything mentioned when I looked.

Might consider testing it with distilled water to get a baseline (calibrated) reading. Then work on different samples of saltwater mix.
