Some keep them on 24x7 others set it up opposite of the light cycle in the reef tank. Somewhat depends on the algae species you are going to be keeping and what your objective is - preventing PH swings, nutrient export etc.
I always do 24/7, that's especially necessary for species of caulerpa. But a lot of people run the lights 12 hrs/day, usually opposite the tank lights to help with pH swings.
