Hello all,

My return pump has died and I just got a Mag 9.5 thinking it was a good choice for my 90G with ~20-30G sump. Well when I installed it, given it doesn't have a controller like the previous one, the flow is WAY too strong and the sump is emptying after than the return in the sump...
I am using the valve to slow the flow but there is then a small leak where the hose attaches to the system and I also read that it is not recommended to slow the flow using a valve as it goes against the pump's work.

Two questions: can I use the valve and if so, do I need a washer or anything else to avoid the leak?
Is there a controller I can purchase for this pump? Again didn't find any and read it is not recommended
Finally is this a good pump at all or did I make a bad purchase here??

Thanks for your help, need to find a solution before the whole system breaks!!

Cheers

I've never had issues throttling a mag pump with a valve, but if you are hesitant just add a "Tee" fitting and a 90 turning back into the sump. Put the valve on the part of the tee that returns to the sump and open it until you get the flow you want.

^^^^^ second this^^^^^^

For the small leak you can use a hose clamp, that is if we talking a hose connection.

I have almost the exact setup as you describe. I have had it throttled down with a valve for several months since I broke down the 210. The previous owner also had it set up this way for at least a year. No issues at all.

Thank you all for the insight and advice. That reassured me. Unfortunately this is not at the hose side, just need to figure out how to stop this leak, though it doesn't actually matter as it goes back into the sump anyway. At least looks like it's an ok pump! Thanks again

I just added a mag 9.5 i bought 13 yrs ago to the new 75 so I could run my manifold. Couple of IMO things:

Throttling a pump with an inline valve really isn't great for it from a mechanical point of view, you're creating artificial head pressure. I think danner even recommends against this. I've always run a T fitting, with a gate valve on the side either firing back down into the sump, or running a manifold for this tank.

a950gph pump is out running your drains? Can I ask what style of drain your running? I siphon system like a bean or herbie, even running 1" pipe, can handle a mag 18 without it running past it(Have one sitting in the garage I tested that with in fact). With head loss I'd imagine you're only turning 850gph out of the 9.5. If you're running Dursos or open channels, and have two drains or more in the same box, might consider going to a siphon system, all you would need it some plumbing parts and a gate valve.

Didn't see this..... the pvc connection is leaking? You're going to fight salt creep coming out of that, and I would not trust a joint that's already leaking. Much cheaper to replace than fix! If you need bulkheads and cannot get them locally, I have a spare 3/4 and 1 inch in my big box of fittings I could turn loose of in a pinch, I'd just have to meet you to get them to you.
