I have been talking to Russ about upgrading my RO (Ecowater) to 50gpd. And one question that came up is chloramines. Pearland sent a letter out a few years ago that they were starting to provide some Houston water that had chlormaines instead of the chlorine that Pearland uses. Does anyone with an RO system in Houston worry about chlormaines?

You might want to call your local water company - they will be able to tell you if they are using chloramines or not.

Chloramines are a combination of chlorine and a small amount of ammonia used as a disinfectant by water authorities. If I remember correctly they are using chloramines now because they last longer in the distribution system, chloramines safety, and for chloramines lack of taste and odor. The main significance is if your carbon filters didn't remove the chloramines from the tap water your ro membrane wouldn't last very long. Chlorine degrades the performance of the membrane.

Chloramines are very toxic to your livestock (well documented for fish, less well documented for inverts). They can be treated for our purposes by use of a systems with 1)catalytic carbon GAC cartridge, 2) carbon block, 3) RO, 4) then DI.
