Hello all.

I was just wondering if any of you use or have used the rotozip or dremel tool to cut acrylic. I currently have a dremel tool with tons of attachments and am debating purchasing a rotozip. I want to try my hand at acrylic work so I wanted to get some opinions on what works best for cutting acrylic. I will need a tool to cut the circle flanges and possibly to create the keyholes in the flange. What do you guys recommend I use for these tasks? I have read that the dremel or rotozip works to cut the acrylic but it gets so hot that it melts the acrylic and doesn't leave clean cuts. Another reason for purchasing the rotozip is that it has tons of uses. Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks.

Brandon

I use a RotoZip sometimes for weird cuts and circles. You will have no luck with streight lines :)

The real key is the bit. If you dont get the plastic rotozip bit (see e-bay) it will just melt the plastic as you cut and when your done you will have just made a mess and the piece you cut will be glued in place.

So what else do you use to cut the acrylic? I know a table saw is a necessity for cutting straight lines in sheet acrylic. What do you use to cut the circle flanges besides the rotozip? What about cutting acrylic tubing? Thanks for the input so far.

I do all my circles with the rotozip. Some people use fly cutters but I can never get them to work without screwing up the piece.

A band saw works nice but wont be streight or a circle.

Tubing I use a table saw with a jig.

Thanks Nick. If you get a chance can you post a link to the plastic bits you are talking about. All I see are multiple packs with wood/plastic/metal bits.

Thanks.

I just used a dremel with the little skil-saw-type attachment. It did a great job for me with 1/8 and 1/4 acrylic. Pics of my new sump/fuge soon to follow in this forum!
