Hey I have another question for yall. I have just in the past few days noticed a thin layer of crap covering a little of my sand glass and parts of rock here and there. The best way I can describe it is it looks like rust, kinda brown with a red tint to it. I took my magnet on my glass and it came right off. I want to know if it is red slime algae or something else and how do i get rid of it right now!! Thanks

I don't think it is overfeeding. If you are using RO/DI than that is normal for a new tank. Next thing you know it will be green algae every where then coraline. My tank is going through a mini-algae cycle right now since I upgraded and have a little bit of the rust algae on some PVC that was new.

I don't know if you're referring to the beautiful golden brown diatoms that I understand are expected, or are referring to the gorgeous reddish cyano bacteria that comes with spring, or the deep emerald green fuzzy algae that then takes over, but I've endured all three, and now have pretty pink and purple coraline growing. My tank is 4 months old........be patient, it will pass :)

Ok great, I have some good things to look forward to and some not so great things.
I do not over feed my tank, I feed sparingly and nothing is left over, well almost nothing.
I do however use ro/di water and have been since the first water change. So there are a few more phases to go through yet huh.
Thanks for the help all.

Also, if it's cyano bacteria, which does come off easily, and spread even easier, good water flow is a must to keep it in check, though even Eric Borneman says he gets it in the spring. So I didn't feel too bad when our tank got it. We upgraded our pump, and now have more flow, and it seemed to help tremendously. And fighting conches eat it, too.
