If you are going to Vietnam, go to NHA TRANG. there is an island out there that has beautiful reef. You can rent a boat for $50 allday.

isnt it illegal anyways?
I heard from one person back then that if u can visit some of the wholesalers over there and buy stuff from them and they can give you a CITEs documentation then you can bring it in legally. he said he brought some clams from Palau (phillipines?) back here that way.
And didn't mean taking the corals from the ocean while diving.. not only its illegal but also lot of hassles to find the water/bag to keep it and pack it up.. I'd rather buy it from a store to have it all packed up well.

I wasn't able to go there when I went back to VN 2 yrs ago but I will this time. I went to NT once when i just finished highshool in VN back then it's still one of the most memorable trip I ever have.

Did you mean the VinPearl island where they had the Miss Universal this past summer? I heard it's the most popular place in NT nowsaday. Some also told me that they have trips that take you on the boat to some place where you can see the big prawns from the boat and just point to the ones you want and they will dive in to get them and grill them right on the boat for you - sound delicious:)

We were there 2years ago and i forgot the island name. We rented a boat and they took us to 4 different islands. You can ask your driver and he should knows what im talking about. the island that has a reef, you cant go up there and far away from the other islands. the boat will dock there and you get to snorkel.

I would check out North Siliwassi and sipidan when you are in indonesia. There are some unreal dive sites there. Thoes 2 are on my dream trip list.

I was in Ko Tao last December, getting certified. It was a cheap and easy place to dive. However, I am unsure how it compares to elsewhere, since Thailand was the first place I dived. Overall, I actually liked snorkeling around Ko Phi Phi the best, but probably because I got to spend the most time in the water :)

In Ko Tao, I can recommend the Buddha View "resort." I was told the most probable time to see whale sharks there is in March. Have you looked into diving from Khao Luk, Thailand north of Phuket?

I'll be in Indonesia in Dec/Jan for about a month, so I am looking for places worth diving, too. I'll probably be in Bali and I'll also have to see about heading to where John suggested.

Thanks all for the info.

Cheers,

Unfortunately, I'll be on vacation starting from ~December 21 for a month. Probably head to Bali first. Are you diving elsewhere in Indonesia? I'll PM you my email. If you have some good dive experiences or recommendations, I would appreciate that.

I'll be flying through Singapore, and probably go through only Indonesia.
