The ones locally from the stores can be difficult because they are wild caught. You will need a species tank with no corals and low flow and be hatching brine shrimp or another source of live food. Try http://forum.seahorse.org/ or the Seahorse forum on RC. Don't put one in a reef tank.

The only seahorse you could put in that would be the dwarf seahorse (zosterae) and you won't find them locally. You can find additional information about them at www.seahorse.org and talk to Sherri (Cakepro) :)

The guys got awesome feedback. So I wouldn't be nervous about buying from him. The bid right now is $12 for 3 sea horses. How low do you think the price ought to be? I know when I see them in the stores they're more like $20 a piece.

The reason is because dwarves need a certain density of baby brine shrimp available for them to eat, and you can't really acheive that density in a 10 gallon tank. They are slow and methodical eaters and will not chase food.

If you're considering ordering from Bob, who has a notoriously long wait and pretty crappy customer service, you might want to check out http://www.seahorseworld.com/. You'd better hurry because they're closed in July and August. It's too hot to ship during that time.

Be prepared to hatch brine shrimp every single day and feed them twice a day in order for them to live. Dwarves are very prolific and males will give birth twice a month. The baby seahorses will need to be fed newly hatched brine shrimp up to 4 times a day. It's quite labor intensive.

5 gallons for less than 60 or so dwarves, in my opinion, is still way too large. I'd go with a maximum of a 1 gallon tank if you are going to order a dozen seahorses (and I still think this is pretty big ~ a half-gallon would be better). The tank will need daily water care maintenance too because the brine shrimp will foul the water. You can buy brine shrimp eggs from www.brineshrimpdirect.com. I've been buying the 1 lb. can of premium grade (90% hatch) rate eggs and I've been pleased with them. Ideally you should decapsulate the brine shrimp eggs too, which will result in a much higher nutritional value (at least for the first 12 hours).

I hate to repeat myself, but it's a lot of labor! Have you considered any of the larger species that don't have such demanding nutritional needs? Many of the larger species can adapt to eating frozen mysis, cyclop-eeze, etc.

Seahorses

I have 2 medium sized brown seahorses 3-1/2'' that I keep in my reef tank. They eat Mysid shrimp once a day and are quite active. I would like to buy more but I do not know where to get them either locally or from an experienced shipper, any ideas where I might find a variety of them? I would also be interested in finding them wholesale as I have a few friends that are interested in a species tank and I thought I might expand my present business into some careful custom marine outfitting.

Thanks in advance.
