I have everything ready to set it up. the only problem is the lighting part. My tank hood has the places for 2 screw in bulbs and the most i can put in there is 2, 20watt compact flourescent 50/50 bulbs. which would give me 4 watts per gallon. Then the problem is how close the lights are to the water, there will be nothing between the lights and the water. would this work, does anyone know. and also how many fish can i put in there. is the 1 inch of fish per 10 gallon rule a must????????? Any help is appreciated. thanks

think small fish like gobies and clown fish. coral wise your looking at mushrooms and zoas unless you modify your lights and add something better. You could make a simple hood with a single 96 watt compact bulb or even a mh setup for better corals.

I would think that as far as PC lighting for a 10 gallon tank, i would go with the 96W quad fixture. And as far as I can tell, that inch of fish per gallon or whatever if just a load of crap and really means nothing. Just like the watts per gallon rule which also means next to nothing. It just depends on how good your filtration is as to how many fish you can keep (and of course physical space within the tank). Id prob say no more than 3 or 4 small fish in a 10 gallon though. Any more than that and the fish are gonna be pressed in there like sardines, lol.

The inch of fish per gallon, and watts per gallon are useless measures. Types of filtration, type of fish, types of lighting, depth of tank, etc... Are more appropiate ways to measure.

What type of hood do you have?

If you want to do away with it, the cheapest light for it would be the 96w coralife powerquad.

I've got one over a 10g, it works great and cost less than the 96w powequad retro I've got in over my 40g.

You can find them here very cheaply....If you go this route, spend the extra money on a set of legs and an extra bulb....$19 for the extra 50/50 bulb is a fantastic price.

What kind of filtration are you running on this tank?
That will determine to a large degree how many fish, and which ones are appropriate.

2-3 fish is about the max anyway just due to space limitations, but going up to 4 could be done with the right mix if your filtration is pretty good, and you're diligent about doing weekly water changes.

Hellolights.com or you can find some good deals on ebay. Alot of the online retailers sale their products on ebay and you save by getting it there. Just look at any online vendor at pc lighting that will fit your tank. you can find one with legs that will sit on the tank then put egg crate. you wouldnt have to worry about the lid then.

Well my dad has a 75gallon set up and is giving me some of his live rock to put in my 10gallon tank. so i figured i could get some lighting and sand and have me a nice little reef tank. i have a marine landpenguin bio filter with 100 gph for my filter and i am ready to get it rolling once i get the lighting. once i set it up. i plan on posting journal pics with my digital camera. should be a fun hobby. i plan on throwing 2 clowns and a goby in there after a good while.

if you want you can modify a aquaclear filter into a refugium, but if you want to use the penguin bio filter i would stick it on your dads tank if he will let you and let some bacteria start building on it so when you put it on your tank the benifical bacteria will be there. your cycle time will be cut down to days since you will have LS, LR and established bacteria from your dads tank. Plus if you do half water from his tank and half new water you might not have a cycle at all. My 9 didnt cycle at all when i did this. I would let he filter run for a week or so.
What do you think incysor? agree?

Thanks...It's been very slow in getting there. I took well over 6 months to stock it to the point it is now.

You should check out:

for more nano-specific info and a lot of cool pics.

In fact there's a photo contest going on right now...Sort of. It kinda got derailed.

Odyssea was formerly Jebo brand as far as I can tell. Ive heard that they're lighting is pretty good for the price you pay (cant expect too great of things at those prices) but overall work pretty well. Ive never used any of their lighting products personally so I cant give you much more info than that. If your going to go the ebay route be sure and check around for prices. Ebay will generall beat everyones prices but some things you can get cheaper elsewhere besides ebay. Check this site out: http://www.aquatraders.com they have some great prices on Odyssea/Jebo stuff.
