If you're going to start a reef, ditch the hood. Bio-wheels are not used in reef-keeping. I don't have to get into the details, but that type of aerobic bacteria does not provide the type of nutrient break-down that is necessary in a reef aquarium.
Once you've ditched the hood, your options are wide open.
I run a Lifereef overflow from my 33G to a sump where I have a Precision Marine Redline 100 skimmer. That's been a pretty solid setup.
I'm not a fan of skimmers built to hang on the back of an aquarium. Skimmers collect some nasty stuff and HOB skimmers have this tendency to put that nasty stuff on the floor. This upsets my wife; that's bad.
If you have to go with a HOB skimmer, I'd look into something that at least seems to have solid construction. I actually like the performance of the Prizm Pro (ducking to avoid shoes). But, when the plastic started coming apart at the seams(!) I found that troublesome. I've heard some good/some bad about the remora. The skimmate has always looked a little weak in the pics I've seen though.
I think one of the hang in tank Tunze skimmers might work well, but I'd avoid that "nano" Tunze. In fact, I avoid any aquarium equipment with the word "nano" in the name. To me, that always seems to mean "less capacity, same great price!"
