I'm getting a 90g DAS. What is the best internal skimmer for it?

Thanks!

Narkon,
I asked the same question a few weeks ago. It's Dutch Aquarium Systems. It's sump is inside the back of the aquarium.

It's not drilled and I don't plan on drilling it right now.

Mikester,
I'm game for lots of things, but I don't think skimmerless is one of them. And by the way, my husband is glad I'm not a man. ;)

You know, my wife says the same, thing, lol. :D

We bought Mikester's Venturi skimmer and are very happy with it. Be prepared for the price though! We only skim occasionally, sometimes once a week sometimes once every couple of weeks. A lot of corals do better with less skimming. Of course if you have a FO skimming is a must.

 Sorry about that. The club is about 80% male, so I just made an assumption, and you know what they say about those.

And skimmerless isn't as scary as it sounds - lots of people are doing it with great success. Anyway, for a good HOB skimmer for that size tank, I would go with an AquaC Remora Pro.

Thanks KarenHorn and mikester. I'm new to all this, so I need lots of help. I'm picking the tank up on the 23rd, so I haven't even laid eyes on it. Yes, I'm very clueless, and I don't like being clueless. They guy I'm getting it from is very helpful and will send more photos soon, but until then, I'm living on expert advice.

And mikester, as a teenager my best friends were guys. Maybe that's why I like this forum. Guys were fun, great protection, and never chased my boyfriends. LOL

Depends on bioload, other forms of nutrient export, etc. I have a very functional refugium, a DSB, and am pretty consistent at doing water changes every 2 weeks. I have probably an average to slightly high bioload, yet my nitrates never get very high even without using a skimmer.

The biggest potential problem with not using a skimmer is if you have a sudden influx of nutrients - a mass dieoff of some sort - it can overwhelm the system. As an example, I went on vacation last week, and before I left my nitrates were at 2 ppm. I had 7 astrea snails (from that group order) die and rot while I was away, and when I came back my nitrates had climbed to 7 ppm. Still not terrible, but you can see what an effect a dieoff can have.

IMO that is the main reason why a skimmer could be useful, and I may play around with a DIY counter-current airstone skimmer in the future, just to have that insurance, but I don't want to rely on one as my primary means of nutrient export.

This is all i have for filtration: a biowheel, a filter bag, a refigum with mud and regular water change..5 gallons every wk...feel free to comment...my nitrate is at 10ppm not too bad i dont think

I have a 75 gallon DAS and we drilled the back of that puppy up so much :) We wanted to put a sump and more returns in and we run an Aqua C Remora also and I love it.

Anything Aqua C (proteinskimmer.com)

If you don't have a sump, i'd get the Remora Pro with the upgraded pump. Not very pricey, but super efficient.

Depend on what you have in your tank that you can go skimless or not.. If you have mostly softies and lps and not a lot of fishes.. skimless maybe ok.
i used to go the skimless way, but from the time i got my current skimmer, i love it! I helped me to keep the algea in control, and allow me to feed my fishes more and i have a lot of fishes :)
If you keep sps, skimmer is almost a must since sps have better color when nitrate is low - ask reefalot about this :) Also, have you seen any "tank of the month" (sps or softies..) that didn't have a good skimmer w/ it?

Euroreef, Lifereef, and Aqua C are top skimmers out there. I personally have Lifereef, and I love it. It is so easy to clean (no screws to mess with) just detach the top half and rinse. I clean my skimmer once a week. And don't worry about the amount of skimmate and what color it is b/c more crap you pull out just means you have more bio load. Just my .02 cents.

My cousin has a DAS system, slightly smaller version I think.

We modified (mangled) an old Red Sea Berlin to fit in that internal 'sump'.... driven with a Rio 1700 or 2500 (I know!).

And to do that we still had to remove some of the baffles.

It's really space constrained in there. May be able to get some pics of what we did from him.
