I am looking into starting up a 65 reef tank. Rush and coral. I am curious who makesa good quality skimmer that is relatively quiet. tank will be in the tv room and I do not mind a little hum; but do not want it to be too loud:Thanks

Not asking for much, are you? I'm following along on this one. If I could quiet down my skimmer, I'd be happy as a flea on a burnt pole, but I can't, so, I'm unhappy.

Huh? I can't hear you. Let me turn my skimmer off.

There, that's better. What was the question?

I have a PM ES100 skimmer sitting in my garage I'm willing to sell.

I got a Coralife super skimmer thats fairly quiet, main thing is your stand, If its going to sit outside it's going to be an issue, I have a closed stand and when I close the doors you can't hear much that goes on in there but the water on the overflow sometimes.

My bubble magus is quiet when it's not up against the wall of my sump. Before this I had a PM bullet 1 with Gen-x PC40. I would not wish that skimmer/pump combo on anyone. Skimmed like a BEAST but sounded like the someone left the garbage disposal on all the time.

I guess I should mention that my tank is in my den less than 4 feet from my TV, so a quiet system was very important to me.

You want quiet, it can be pricey. Royal Exclusive makes the Bubble king and its top of the line and prolly about as quiet as you can get. I have heard bubble magus's are fairly quiet as well. Its all in the quality of the pump. If you buy a cheapo skimmer, they don't tend to have very quiet pumps, or if they do its likely because they don't pull very much air and are not quite as effective.

I have a reef octopus 2000ss that is not real loud if kept off the wall. Plus I have nothing bad to say about it. Small compact and does a great job.

My tanks have always been in my bedroom. Ran a PM Redline125 on the 75G and it was pretty quiet (that skimmer is now for sale). I'm running a BubbleMagus on my 180 and it is also pretty quiet.

You can decrease the ambient noise by putting a foam pad in the sump under the skimmer, keeping the skimmer pump away from the sump wall, and putting foam insulation on the inside walls of your stand.

PM Bullet 1 here with an Iwaki pump. Just put some kind of padding underneath the pumps and your golden. I get a little hum and some toliet sounds but thats because my holes for my reverse flow are above the water line and you can hear the water coming out of them, but I never have to worry about reverse siphon.

Ostentum,
What size iwaki are you running? That skimmer performed like a beast for me. I just couldn't enjoy a movie when it sounded like I had the mechanical room of a water park under my tank. Nor do I miss the almost daily adjustments

I think its the 40-RLT but I will have to check when I get home. were you using the collection addon? I have also added a filter sock to the output to catch excess bubbles and make it not sound like a waterfall in my sump

I did run the collection cup and loved it. It saved me from an overflow on more than one occasion. Wish my BM NAC7 had the option now that I think of it.

Yeah, I should have run a sock on the water output. I had it above water and coming in from the side... LOUD LOUD LOUD!

I have a swc Xtreme 120 its quiet. Its in my sons room not four feet from his bed.

The loudest thing on the tank is the dang mag 5 return pump - well really its the vibration on glass in the sump.

Just a suggestion, buy the biggest and the best that will fit in the sump and you can afford. The skimmers below are not cheap but both are very good quality. If you want to spend less money look at Bubble Magus.

Research these two:

ATB Cone (small size)
Deltec APF600

Bubble Magus is one bad azz skimmer. I used to run the larger BM-200 and it was kicking azz on 120/g.
