So last week I went to check on the wetside for my ato when I was cleaning the sump and found the casing cracked, magnet rusted and split the glass.
I ordered a new wetside from coralvue and I was not happy I had to pay 7 bucks to ship something so small lol. But now that it came, would it be okay if I put silicone around the seams so this doesn't happen again? Or what else can I use as an extra layer protection?

I would sure give that a try. I don't see how it would harm it in any way. Be sure to clean the surface real well with denatured alcohol or something similar to remove any oils..

Thanks. I am going to try it today then. Just want to be safe. ☺

Same thing happened to mine. Other than that, was a great unit. I've since switched to the smart micro.

I read a few reviews it happened to others also. I am going to try this one with added silicone and see how it holds up. Next one I get will likely be the micro. The micro is the same just smaller?

Pretty much. I have it in my nano right now. I'm gravity feeding the other tanks, but am doing something different here soon.

Smart should be ashamed of themselves. You can lose all your livestock with rust issues like that. :(

That's exactly what my thoughts were. I seen someone post a review of that exact thing happening. He had same size 90 as me and his whole tank crashed... sad. Hmmm never thought of doing gravity fed route. Might be something I should consider. [emoji2]

Yeah, I've seen a lot of tanks having issues because these guys' product. I hate when companies use us as beta testers...

Gravity fed is pretty safe, but it has it's disadvantages. It's simple for most, but if you setup a AWC setup, you really can't use it anymore. For most tanks, it's great!

It's not just coralvue.
My two little fishies magnetic algae clip did the same thing.
Even some Vortech wet sides have split/rusted.
Saltwater is EXTREMELY invasive/corrosive and will get into just about anything. Spreading silicone around it won't help.
Best thing is to just periodically check any magnet in your tank and expect that eventually you will have to replace it.

I hear you Dennis. I don't like it but I don't disagree haha. [emoji39] I will need to check it more often which is good to do during routine cleaning. [emoji4]

I don't disagree that it is extremely corrosive but saltwater is no more invasive than regular "water" strictly speaking. Salt laden humid air, salt creep etc. is a different story.. so just want to be clear on that..

I have used silicon on objects that are made of two pieces and it does work as a seal if you prep surfaces correctly and assuming its not made of hdpe or one of the other difficult plastics.
