Margarita snails do not live in the water temp that we keep our reefs at. I've never been able to keep one alive longer than a few weeks.

You will be much better off with astrea, turbo, and ceriths.

+1 this...Margaritas are cooler water snails. They can last a few weeks to months in the warmer waters of our reefs but eventually "cook." Not sure why LFS still sell them.

I've always had the best luck with astrea snails. Be careful with the turbos, they are large and will knock everything over. Only a problem if you have a lot of frags placed on the rocks.

+1

I listed mine in order of my liking. Plus, turbos hide during the day and astreas work all day and night. :)

Hi, turtlesoup.
My favorite snails are ceriths. They seem to live a long time in my tank and they're good algae eaters. Don't overlook stomatella's - quite possibly the best all round algae control critters out there...

+1 on stomatellas, I don't know anywhere you can buy them but stomatellas are fantastic cleaners. I have a suction cup thermometer in the corner of my tank. I noticed the other day that it was dirty in that corner and there was a stomatella there. Later in the day I saw the entire area was spotless and was ocnvinced my g/f had cleaned it. That stomatella is the only invert in my tank that will actually clean everything spotless. Most snails just mow a path through the area.

Hi, turtlesoup.
Can't say about astrea's because I stopped buying those a long time ago, but for a 46G, I'd start with a dozen ceriths...

good luck,
Steve

That's the idea, before long you'll be helping others.

Don't be afraid to ask if you have a question, it can save you a lot of time, trouble, and money.
