check out that crazy hitchhiker crab. suckers 3 to 4 inches across.

so far, just grazing on the greenery on the back wall. hopefully will stay that way.

tank is about 4 months old, maturing nicely. all the play around frags i took out were starting to encrust.

Holy Smokes! Was all of that collected locally?

Are you at the point where when you find another nice colony, you just trade it out with what you currently have just to keep from overcrowding the tank?

what up Rich. yeah, of course collected locally, mostly from snorkeling right in my back yard...probably 80 seconds on the bike to the ladders (leisurly pace), then in the water. its interesting, you never know what a coral will look like, till you get it in the tank. these are very very common corals. the ooh aaah corals are found deeper, and require scuba gear. you can really only bring back one or two things on a dive due to size, and the need to keep at least one hand free for safety reasons. When your snorkeling and going down to 20' you can get whatever you want. most everything is attached to a rock, so yes i swap them out at will, never do i break a coral off from the main colony. im also building my own underwater display with what corals i return, i have a coral head i decorate, as i bring anything i take out of the tank to the same spot. these corals are fractional when you compare the main colony. the yellow looking one, right side...main coral head is about 40' long. this was a loose peice on the edge of the main coral....

zoas are sporadic (i have some light pink ones). ive spotted other colonies, but cant ever find them again!! you can dive the same spot every day, and see something you missed all the times before.

when you coming out? got a guaranteed spot for ya here when you get tired of the daily grind driving in houston traffic, paying a mortgage, utility bills, etc.......beach volleyball every weekend!!!! shorts and sandals 365, he he. 8) 8) 8)

Sure,

mostly beach shots...one of housing, and a couple from Ebeye, the next island up where the locals live. 95% of the poeple here are Americans on the island, and we have some basics, like burger king, anthonys pizza, baskin and robbins etc....two movie theatres, organized sports....and most importantly two nice glass back racquetball courts, with pick up games 3 days a week. luckily the president, and the number 2 military guy on base are avid players, so the courts are just as good as any stateside. it is extremely family oriented here, kids play freely in the streets.....if you dont like to be outside, or interact with people, might not be your cup of tea. surfing. boating, scuba and sailboarding are big out here. we all live for the weekend, when you can literally go all day without your shoes on. im going to stay past my 2 year commitment, we love it here. i also get airfare paid, 30 days vacation annually too.

the marshall islands is still a developing nation, so there's a disparity between american haves and RMI haves. were so used to a certain level of living (stable electricity, clean water etc) that they have not whollly reached as a nation. it doesnt take long to hop in a boat and find yourself in pristine waters/wilderness.

for those that are interested, you can go here and peruse the jobs. they do a horrible job of external recruiting, so if your not in the "know" where to look, they arent really posted everywhere. its very cyclical in nature. some folks come out and stay forever, some do the two years and split.

the trick is accompanied or non accompanied. if you're a bit "in demand", i.e. engineers or a manager position then you get accompanied status, family housing etc. if NOT, you're unaccompanied, whereas you stay in the bachelors quarters, which are equivalents to smaller dorm rooms/apartments, and get a meal card.

here's the link. as you can see, a whole myriad of jobs required to make this operation run.
archeoligists, biologists to veterinarians, welders

Joe, life is good in the hood. One of the biggest leaps I've made in life, no looking back. I don't think I've had a stressful moments in months. Funny how free housing, no expenses and tax free $ reduces stress.....paid workation indeed
