Does someone know where I can get the special woods other than those that are at the HD such as Maple, Mahogany, Mesquite, Purpleheart...etc?

Check out Clark's Hardwood in the Heights. They've got a good selection, including a lot of veneered plywood.

Houston Hardwoods also has a pretty good selection.

+1 for Clark's. They had the best price in houston for S4S hard maple. Nice selection of many types of wood. They also have a good stock of rough lumber for about half the price.

If you are going for S4S hard maple, be sure to call before you go. They go through maple pretty quick. Never run out, but the quality at the bottom of the stack can be hard to pick through. Make sure they have a lot and you can get some great boards.
