I would not suggest trying to keep sps corals under only 80watts of lighting. SPS corals need the intensity of the halide lighting and moderate to high flow to survive, under less and they will not live.

I think it would depend on the species of sps, the size/depth of your tank, and the age of your lights. I kept a handful of hardy sps corals under pc lighting for 2 years...granted, it was 384 watts of pc but it was also over a 75 gallon tank. I maintained a gorgeous deep blue millipora and a bright pink birdsnest for 2 years under pc lighting. The bulbs had to be replaced every 6 months, though, which is what drove me to MH. Now I can't believe I wasted two years with pc. :)

No it really doesn't make a super difference, you still going to have a hard time for the to color up, we feel.

But like the others have said, it depends on what it is you are trying to keep. Besides some acro, you can actually keep and grow a good bit of SPS, as long as you don't mind it all being brown.

Gotta agree with Narkon, yes, there are exceptions to every rule, but sps corals tend to less forgiving.

That said also the smaller the system the greater the water swings. SPS and clams both are extremely sensitive to water chemistry swings regardless of the size of the swing.

It's not about what can I try to keep and not have the correct environment but can I give the right environment and keep this coral/fish/critter and have it thrive.

Well we think the LPS would do ok in it, like frogspawn, hammers, maybe monti caps for your SPS. We am sorry, we am writing this while asleep.
