Okay, since I LOVE to plan ahead, I've already started thinking about my "next tank". Here is my starting point:

I've seen 5 or 6 plans on the net with a stand that is more than meets the eye. One was a stand with an adjascent "seating bench" which really housed the fuge. Others have a "bookcase" type left-or-right-or-both side cabinet structure where the sump, skimmer, electrical, fuge, surge, etc parts are houses which allows a sump to (for example) sit half in the side cabinet, and half under the stand.

These designs make a stand which, when placed in a room, make the tank look almost "built-in". Does anyone have a favorite? I am constantly frustrated by trying to keep everything in the stand UNDER my tank (as is the edict from the wife) and trying to get to everything through stand doors that are never well-places or large enough for me.... I a trying to find some suggestions / pointers to give myself more room.....

TIA

I had my stand made by Keith's guy at Aquatic Design, and I had it made very tall... which means you don't have to stoop over to see it and it looks even more impressive.

Consider adding 8 inches to the standard height of a stand, and you'll appreciate it... except you need a ladder to work on the tank!

There's so much room under it that you could take a nap in there, even with my 55 long under it as my ecosystem sump!

I just finished building my stand for my 75 gallon. I made it high enough so the tank is eye level and I have a 55 gallon inside the stand for ecosystem sump etc. I built the side where I can slide the 55 gallon in and out of the stand for maintanence etc. two large doors on the front as well. My canopy is built to match the stand and will house the metal halides as well as vho actinics. If you want pictures pm me and I can email them.

I'm building a stand for my 75. It will be two parts...first I will build the support stucture then I'm making a separate skirt that will cover the support structure. this way I can slide the skirt out of the way and have full access to everything below. I'm putting a door on the skirt for quick access and light maintenece.

I have no pictures, because I haven't built it yet( the tank should be coming in this week) If all goes well I hope to have it done in the next two weeks. I will take lots of pictures for you.

There was a tank on RC that had a metal stand and a cool wooden skirt but I can't find it :(

stand

Something to consider;

I made the stand for my 125G 6-10" higher than average to keep little finger prints off the viewing glass (we have 4 pairs now), but it is a pain to reach in (& hey at 6'2" I'm not short :D ) & too high to appreciate contents when I couch potato.

I had a stand that has been used for approximately 3 years and it lasted about a year before the paint started flaking off then the rust set in. Now it just looks like a nice orange stand....lol. I could probably sand it down and repaint it and have it looking like new again.

With what is a good question. i don't know any gunsmith's that powder coat gun barrels but you never know i guess. I guess you could use stainless steel for a stand but that would get a lot heavier. I just think it is easier and more eye appealing to go with a wooden stand whether you build it yourself or buy a prefab one. I have been thinking about building a stand for a tank where to bottom doubles as a snake cage to house my two western diamond backs though....maybe have to think about that some more.

polane is a type of coating used on gun barrels and stocks that won't chip or peel. it can withstand very harsh conditions.

I know i wouldn't put that on any of my rifles or shotguns. If I am hunting and one of my guns gets wet or dirty the easiest solution is to clean it when I get back home. Most guns I have have been passed down the family tree and all still work flawlessly. I have used a similar product when doing wood work though....called polyurathane. Works great and keeps all my wooden stands from absorbing any nasty saltwater.

the polane goes on the outside of the gun and has no efect on the way a rifle shoots
