What would you guys recommend for a starter DSLR camera. My photography skills are lacking enough that buying a super high end camera would do me almost no good, but I'm tired of trying to take pictures of my tank with my fuji point n shoot. I've read cnet reviews until I'm blue in the face, but I'd really like some ideas from normal people who use them on a regular basis.

Thanks,

Ray King

Junkie: I would recommend a Canon S90 P&S camera + Canon underwater housing.

Ray: for your first DSLR I would also recommend the Rebel line. Cheaper than the Nikon equivalent, and it has "idiot modes" (sports, night shot, etc) you can use until you get a little more experienced too.

Cheers

Don't forget about Pentax. Pentax has been making some great lenses for years and the multi-coating used on the older lenses has kept alot of them around to this day. I shoot with a K200D. Its a starter DSLR and you can probably find one for a decent price online. Pentax just released a new starter line, the K-x. They have four different colored bodies and are pretty small and compact and shoot 720p video.

On the subject of underwater cameras check out the Olympus Stylus line of cameras. They are P+S cameras but have some seriously beefy design specs, essentially mil-spec. IMHO.

I may suggest you go handle some of these DSLRs to find one that you enjoy holding. They are all a little different. Houston Camera Exchange usually has a decent amount of cameras to check out.
