I'm heading down to Galveston in a couple of days and was wondering if anyone had caught any peppermint shrimp down there yet this year. I think I'll give it a try -- what's my best chance - a dip net off the jetties? Cast net in the surf?

Are you guys going to Port Aransas this weekend? Our collection guide says we'll be able to bring home a bucketful. :D

Sunset + low tide = peppermint shrimp. :) They seem to come out as the sun is going down, and are out pretty good for an hour or so, then go back in when it gets dark.

I have family in Jamaica Beach on the bay. What are my chances of getting some off the bulkhead or in the nearby marsh? I think I saw some around the oyster bed off the bulkhead last time.

Hi gang,

What's the sustainable amount of peppermint shrimp that can be collected from the Galveston jetties? Does anyone have any idea how many there are and how many are collected? I know the LFS sometimes get them from Galveston.

Cheers

Wow, I had no idea that type of shrimp could be found in our waters! Now I feel a little daft for spending twelve bucks on one when I could have gone out my back door....

When they are here, there are usually lots of them. There is an negligible amount of collecting of them in Galvatraz to affect the population. I think most of the population(larvae and/or adults) get swept up from southern portions of Texas based on the fact that you can only find them here for a couple of months when the water is warmer.
