Im New to the hobby. I have a 55 gallon tank. Right now I have a hang on filter system but I am thinking of going to a sump. Does any one have any suggestions for me on how big or anything else as for as what else in need to add to help my tank out. I have a domino dammsel, a mated pair of common clowns and hermits and light foot crabs for cleaners.

30 gal sump, DIY if you can.
hang on overflow
quiteone pump for return
best in sump skimmer you can afford
DSB in the sump if you going to grow sps, (helps with calcium).
for flow you can use a squid on your return for wave motion.

Sumps are great for doing exactly what you are looking for; moving all that life-support equipment out of sight and under the tank.

flexrac pretty much covered everything you will need to hook up a sump to your tank. Basically, the thought is, get as big of a sump as you can possibly fit in the space you've alotted. Sump space can become very valuable, quickly, after heaters, skimmers, return pumps, refugiums, test probes, ect. start taking up room.

Do some research on the hang-on-back overflow, return pumps, and skimmers. There are lots of brands out there, some are great, and some are not worth a penny.
