I didn't add anything to my fuge except some macro from other Marshians and sand and rock...it started teeming with life in no time. I had a few snails and hermits get into the sump by going through the drain line but that doesn't bother me so much :) I did put some galveston fish into my sump...they kinda look like a wrasse but are not. They managed to eat a lot of my pods....I think I will try to get them out when I do my next water change.

actually, the H2S is okay (and inevitable) as long as you leave it alone. Just don't add anything to the sump that will stir up the bottom most layers of the sandbed. Oh, and leaving the lights on 24/7 is alright. If pH isn't a problem (say you have the water well buffered or some fancy system to keep it in check), then it won't make much difference to the water chemistry.
